SHELBY — If Alex Bruskotter’s senior year is any indication, Wright State may have gotten a steal.

The North Central Ohio Player or the Year had a season for the ages while leading Shelby to its first Final Four berth in program history. He averaged 23.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists a game as the Whippets (25-3) won their fifth straight Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference crown.

A 6-foot-7 guard, Bruskotter was the MOAC’s Player of the Year as well as the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association and the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Division II Player of the Year. He was a finalist for Ohio’s Mr. Basketball award.

“Alex’s recruitment was one of the longer recruitments we’ve had here at Wright State and through every step of the way, we became more and more confident that it was a perfect fit for us,” Wright State coach Scott Nagy said when Bruskotter signed his letter of intent in November.

“His work ethic, versatility to play multiple positions and his overall knowledge of how to play the game will be a great addition to the program.”

Bruskotter matched a Division II state semifinal record when he scored 34 points in Shelby’s 68-65 loss to Maysville in the state semifinals.

He is the crown jewel of an All-Area team that includes five other All-Ohioans. Here’s a look at the 2023-24 All-North Central Ohio team.

Brayden Fogle, Lexington

The athletic 6-foot-4 forward was selected the Ohio Cardinal Conference Player of the Year after leading the Minutemen (22-3) to the OCC title and a berth in the Division II district championship game. Fogle averaged team-highs of 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds a game on a team loaded with young talent. Fogle has scored 738 points in two seasons.

Kyevi Roane, Mansfield Senior

An undersized forward, Roane averaged team-highs of 17.9 points and 7.0 rebounds a game for the Tygers (18-7). The 6-foot-1 junior was an All-Ohio special-mention selection in Division II after leading Senior High to a runner-up finish in the Ohio Cardinal Conference and sectional title. Unofficially, Roane has scored 873 points through his first three seasons and is on pace to become just the eighth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.

Amarr Davis, Mansfield Christian

The 6-foot senior will graduate as Mansfield Christian’s career scoring leader after passing Jerry Cline’s previous mark of 1,641 points in a sectional final win over Norwalk St. Paul. Unofficially, Davis scored 1,671 points, adding to an impressive high school résumé. He also is Mansfield Senior’s career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches and will play college football at Lake Erie. Davis averaged 15.6 points a game and was an All-Ohio third-teamer in Division IV, leading the Flames (20-5) to the third 20-win season in program history and first since 1991.

Logan Toms, Lucas

The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 17.2 points a game, piloting the Cubs to their sixth straight Mid-Buckeye Conference crown and a berth in the Division IV district semifinals. Toms passed 2020 graduate Logan Niswander to become the program’s career scoring king. Unofficially, he scored 1,432 career points. Toms was the the MBC Player of the Year and an All-Ohio second-team pick.

Justice Thompson, Crestview

A 6-foot-4 junior, Thompson was an All-Ohio first-team pick in Division III after leading the Cougars (22-2) to a share of the Firelands Conference crown and a sectional championship. The 22 wins were the most ever in a single season. Thompson has scored 954 points through three seasons and is on pace to become the program’s career scoring leader.
